The success of the wikipedia surprises me. I would expect something like any other online discussion area, such as comments on Yahoo News where something like "The mideast is and always will be the melting pot for Terrorists/Murderers. Sit back and enjoy the show...the less we will have to fight in the years to come." is the norm, and is even exceptional for ability to spell. Or some image rating services where 90% of the comments are idiots trying to make the person in the picture feel bad and 5% are idiots trying to make the person in the picture give them a blow job. I sometimes want to add bulletin boards/discussion to the GNP FAQ, but don't want to have to spend time weeding out piles of inanities from morons or keeping them contained in a special area where morons are permitted.
Of course, I haven't seen any objective measures of wikipedia quality and veracity relative to other encyclopedias. But things I have seen have been impressive. I even lost my virginity and made a small tweak to one of the pages myself.
