i am maybe pleased to decide my cds shall go through this process:

• EAC - Exact Audio Copy - extracts from CD, error corrects to prevent errorrorrs, high quality, moo cow. possible deglitching and depopping for very bad cds. Output: wav


• Vorbis.com - Open, Free Audio - convert the wav to .ogg format, which is like mp4/aac, except in my tests is much better. audio quality 3, about 13:1 compression / twice as big as my old crappy 56k mp3s at kerjillion better quality


• Winamp - to play the ogg files.

Would prefer quality 5 setting, but would also like things to fit on the computing device after i convert all 400 or 500 cds. I'll likely never notice the difference anyway.

aac : crap. waveform gets woggled all over the place
mp4: see AAC
mp3: blurbling fishies
mp3pro: see mp3
moo: see cow

bad part: oggdrop converter likes to crash if i don't go one file at a time, which will get old fast, and command line tools just beep cruelly at me when i try to have EAC run them automatically.

there is to be the sleeping. tomorrow the watching of new version of solaris.
