My father's brother was a collector. His focus was TV's, VCR's, video tapes, and parts for all of them. He had other stuff, too, though. There was a small trail from the back door, to the chair where he mostly lived, and from there to the bathroom. I don't know how crowded the bedrooms were, or if he ever used them anymore. It was pretty sad. When he died, he was living in a rental car, but he had rented a semi trailer to store all the things that had been in his apartment before he got kicked out. My dad didn't bother to sort it, but gave it all to the people who owned the trailer in exchange for not having to clean it out.
My mother also tends toward this sort of behavior. She has gotten better at keeping it more under control, but when I was a kid it got pretty crazy sometimes. And that "must save it, it might be useful" attitude was beaten into me. As was the "it's on sale so I'll save money" mindset. Thank heavens I've learned to limit my purchases to (usually) what I know I actually need & will use in a timely manner.

this makes me want to go home and throw away everything, in the off chance I might turn out like that.
