Upon finishing 12 pages of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, i'm not finding much to suggest the need for billions of dollars of sales.

I might have liked it when I was 11 though.

the first book is sort of adequate. they get rather interesting after that, though.

First twelve pages of Sorcerer's Stone...not that spectacular. But the books get better and better, IMHO, and I got hooked. Not in that "this is the greatest thing ever" sort of way, though. I'm always very conscious that it's a children's series. But it's still highly, highly enjoyable.
