Did me know? [livejournal.com profile] thaumata is a meany who says* I have to learn obscure things like 'reading basic sheet music' and 'playing with more than one finger' before I can compose and perform my own microtonal radialfractal raga canons and fugues incorporating African drumming rhythms and gamelan time cycles with lyrics in the language of the humpback whales. Also suggests 1-3 basic books instead of 4 cubic feet of advanced musical philosophy.

That's how you know she's made of silly sauce.

(*for some value of 'says')

not necessarily. though playing with more than one finger gives you more options (getting ideas while messing around on keybd, etc). sightreading is nice, but FWIW I'm terrible at it and it never seemed to prevent composing type stuff.

if you want to perform anything, though, yeah, gotta learn some basics.

So, does every good boy do fine?

I secretly want to make a universal language translator, with one of the languages being musical, so I can have computers do all the learnin for me, then incorporate it into my expanded brain once expanded brains come on the market.

I don't think it transplates well to word-languages, sadly.

That's where the universal comes in : )

I can't wait to hear your music creations.

Nope. About to explode this very minute with anticipation. ;)

Seriously, though, while it's good to know those things and will enhance your understanding of how to create music, there are many composition programs out there that merely require you to know how to plug sound samples into different channels and arrange them until they coalesce into harmony.

Then learn away, my friend, because while it will take longer to learn the manual way, it will stay with you longer. :)
