I hereby officiatedly note my glasses prescription:

and also note that glasses and contacts have different prescriptions...so ”9.00 diopters for glasses is not the same diopters that contacts would have. Flurgle.

Right Eye:

–11.00 diopters (degree of spherical nearsightedness)
–1.00 diopters (degree of astigmatism: ie, i'm -11 in one direction and (–11) + (–1) = –12 in another direction)
85° axis (angle of the above "another direction"; 180 = horizontal, so presumably this would most properly be 90)

Left Eye:

–11.00
–1.00
70
°

Misc scrounged info:

A diopter is a unit of measurement of the refractive error. It may be a negative number (myopia, nearsightedness), or a positive number (hyperopia, farsightedness). A -1.00 diopter myope is able to see objects at 1 meter clearly. A -2.00 diopter myope is able to see objects at a 1⁄2 meter clearly. The greater the myopia, the strength of the lens in diopters needed to correct the refractive error, and the closer an object must be to be viewed clearly.

Note that 1mm in change to the axial length (front to back distance) of the eye is roughly equal to 3 diopters in power.

— so i'm bug-eyed by 3mm.

Visual acuity is a measure of the ability to resolve fine detail. Snellen visual acuity commonly is used and is expressed as a comparison of the distance at which a given set of letters is correctly read to the distance at which the letters would be read by someone with clinically normal vision. A value of 20/80 indicates an individual reads letters at 20 feet that normally can be read at 80 feet. Normal visual acuity is 20/20.

20/20 Normal vision. Fighter pilot minimum. Required to read the stock quotes in the newspaper, or numbers in the telephone book.
20/40 Able to pass Driver's License Test in all 50 States. Most printed material is at this level.
20/80 Able to read alarm clock at 10 feet. News Headlines are this size.
20/200 Legal blindness. Able to see STOP sign letters.
20/500 "Profound"
20/1000 "Near Total"

— hm... i don't think i can see stop sign letters... so i'm legally blind? do i get special discounts and things?

i give up on finding a conversion formula for diopters to snellen. i refuse to utilize my brain in coming up with one. i didn't like optics class much. go figger. well wait:

In Diopters 20/something
-0.50 20/25 to 20/30
-1.00  20/30 to 20/50
-3.00 20/300
-4.00 20/400
-5.00 20/600
-6.00 20/800
In Diopters 20/someting
0.5 20/25
1.0 20/40
2.0 20/70
3.0 20/100
4.0  20/200

closer... closer...

Nearly 90% of all myopic patients have corrections of less than -6.00 D, which is in the mild to moderate range. The severity of myopia is demonstrated below:

Mild > –6.00 D
Moderate –6.00 D to –10.00 D
Severe –10.00 D to –15.00 D
Extreme < –15.00 D

AH!!!!

"Divide the result of step 1 (variable A) by 20 to get the starting dioptric power. I.E. 20/50 would result
in a power of 50/20 = 2.5 diopters. I.E.: 20/200 would result in a starting power of 200/20 = 10 diopters."

ARGH!!!

except that doesn't match the above info. I give up! I am unworthy of google!

mac ie displays it centered if i don't list the doctype, which is obscene.

yes i'm too lazy to puzzle it out myself. unless no guru appears. of course nobody but me will care about or view this page so moo.

Jenin deaths video implicates army

The BBC has obtained video footage which appears to show an incident in the West Bank city of Jenin two weeks ago in which two Palestinian children were killed by Israeli tank fire.

The Israeli army has apologised for causing the deaths of six-year-old Ahmad Abu Aziz and his 13-year-old brother Jamil, but said the tank crew opened fire to deter Palestinians breaking a curfew and approaching them.

However, the footage shows a tank firing the first of two shells, at close range, at a group of civilians who are running away.

The dead boys' father, Youssef Abu Aziz, told the BBC that they had gone outside to buy chocolate, thinking the Israeli curfew imposed on their city had been lifted.
