I used to set an alarm just to wake me up to take the drugs. After about a week, the taking-earlier started helping me sleep earlier. It was never early enough to function real-life, though, except at very small doses. Eventually I started taking it last thing before I tried to go to sleep. For me, it takes ~6 hours, then it kicks in. Not a huge night's sleep, but much better than what was happening.
Also, it's possible to micro-manage doses. Dissolve 50 mg tablet of zoloft in 8 oz warm water. Let sit 20-30 minutes. Shake to suspend any undissolved particles before taking. Mix with juice to mask nasty taste.
Double check these, 'cause I'm sleepy, but I think it works out like: 8 oz = 50 mg 4 oz (1/2 cup?) = 25 mg 2 oz (1/4 cup?) = 12.5 mg 2 Tbs = 6.25 mg 1 Tbs = 3.125 mg
So for example, if you're currently taking 50 mg/day, you could try reducing it to ~37.5 mg/day and see if that lets you sleep earlier but still kicks depression butt.

It'll work out eventually.
