It's other-people day; let's drop in on them

Do people "drop by" any more?

I kind of would like to have a home where people stopped by and sat about reading or playing with the cats or building odd structures on the table, but perhaps that doesn't happen in homes without children, and perhaps I'm stuck in the ideas of the past.

Believe it or not, most of my time at home is spent doing projects around the house, playing video or board games with Heidi, having philisophical discussions, or tending to animals. It is only then that I am actually on the computer.

We have 'friends' of the family dropping by via a phone discussion in the next few minutes and such has instigated in mother a mad dash scramble to make the home closer to picture perfect that she would of course do it if SHE had legs to do it and we should all be just as frantic or frenetic about it and why does this house get allowed to get to this state! Ohmigosh one borad game is out and the piano sheet music is messy and there are three newspapers accumulated by the mantle!! the horror!

It doesn't necessrily happen in homes with children, either. We never have any dropping-by happen. Maybe in the new house? It's not so remote.

It's a nice idea, though, and I wish it happened more these days.

as a child, I would spend weekends with my father, and we would always drop in on my aunts and uncles and grandmother. I remember thinking it was terribly rude, but now sometimes I wish I were close enough to people that they could just stop by anytime.

of course, if they wanted to find me, they would need to come to my work - but that is a different problem entirely.

Since I'm prone to lounging about in my jammies on days where I don't have to go to work, I get a little weird about folks just dropping in. I mean, I do like the idea of people feeling comfortable enough to drop by and do things like you suggested, but it would have to be people that I really liked - and liked enough that I didn't care if they showed up while I was in my jammies. I don't know (in this town) many people that I like that much. You know, people who already knew I was lazy and liked me anyways. You and mittel can drop by anytime, tho. :)

Not me. I want to make sure my house is clean before anyone comes over.

it happens if one has the right kinds of friends who happen to also live close enough. children seem not to be required; the sort of people who have stuff with which to build seem to like playing with their inner child just as much. :)

lots of people drop by on the corner near my house, mostly to buy some speed or maybe crack and also to boom their stereo so loud my fillings come loose.

they tend to not stay long, which is okay. but there are lots of them.

the ants drop by once in a while, just to see how dirty the kitchen floor is and maybe taste the small drips of honey that have leaked out of the squeezer.

the county dropped by (via mail) to remind me I owe them $4000 in property tax. they didn't seem to want any chai, just a check.

some hair balls dropped by and seem to be congregating on the edges of the stairs to the basement. another popular hang out seems to be behind the dining room door.

not many people drop by, though.
