Do people "drop by" any more?

I kind of would like to have a home where people stopped by and sat about reading or playing with the cats or building odd structures on the table, but perhaps that doesn't happen in homes without children, and perhaps I'm stuck in the ideas of the past.

We have 'friends' of the family dropping by via a phone discussion in the next few minutes and such has instigated in mother a mad dash scramble to make the home closer to picture perfect that she would of course do it if SHE had legs to do it and we should all be just as frantic or frenetic about it and why does this house get allowed to get to this state! Ohmigosh one borad game is out and the piano sheet music is messy and there are three newspapers accumulated by the mantle!! the horror!
